The Galewood Residents Organization has organized rally at Galewood-Montclare Library (inside the Rutherford/Sayre Park Fieldhouse, 6871 W Belden Ave.) on Monday, April 1. This location was established as a temporary replacement for the popular Grand Avenue location that closed in 2010, but the branch was never given the resources to succeed, with limited hours, few books, no public computers or WiFi, and very little space for community events.
On Monday, the GRO is asking residents to come between 10am and 6pm and check out as many books as possible. If enough residents come, they may be able to clear out the whole library, creating a spike in circulation that CPL and the media can’t ignore. It’s a fun, simple way to send a message to CPL that Galewood/Montclare deserves a full-service library.
It’s also a good chance to teach your kids about community activism, especially since this branch serves Sayre Language Academy students. Improv library benefits all of us. Consider stopping by the library after school on Monday, and stick around for our press conference at 5pm.
The event continues all month, GRO hopes you’ll find time in April to visit the library, thank the librarians for their hard work, and check out a bunch of books. With enough support, the branch will break their yearly circulation record in one month, hopefully convincing CPL that it’s time for improvements.
